A "dark horse" is a term used to describe a little-known person or thing that emerges to prominence. Common to horse racing parlance.
(Used in a casual conversation in the morning half of my carpool with Erin. Then later in the evening portion of the carpool appeared as a clue in the crossword puzzle we were solving during our carpool)
